Occupational Health and Women within the Workplace

Occupational Health and Women within the Workplace
The occupational health within the workplace is important for women worldwide because, women need to be protected against sexual assault, discrimination and other workplace abuses. Friedan said that the National Organization for Women (NOW) purpose is “to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American society now, exercising all the privileges and responsibilities thereof in truly equal partnership with men (Freidan, 2004).”
Freidan reported that a work-friendly environment should include the following: “Treat all customers/clients equally and with respect, without regard to their sex, race, sexual orientation, age, marital or family status, pregnancy, parenthood, disability or size. Provide a workplace free of discrimination based on sex, race, sexual orientation, age, marital or family status, pregnancy, parenthood, disability or size. Support all employees in their efforts to balance work and family responsibilities. In this regard, companies not only meet the minimum requirements of the law but also strive toward policies that are genuinely family-friendly. (Such policies might include paid sick leave, flex-time, job sharing, child care and/or elder care benefits, family and medical leave for companies not legally obligated to provide it.) Do not tolerate sexual or racial harassment, but do educate all employees, including management, with regard to anti-harassment policies and rigorously enforce them. Ensure that any allegation of sexual or racial harassment, sexual assault or sex or race discrimination are promptly and thoroughly investigated, and ensure that employees making such allegations are protected from retaliation and are not required to seek redress from a workers' compensation board or forced to submit to arbitration in lieu of pursuing legal or statutory remedies. Have an affirmative action program to ensure that women and people of color are included in the recruitment, hiring and promotion of employees. Do not tolerate sexist, racist, sexually-explicit or pornographic images in the workplace or at any company-sponsored events. Respect the laws that recognize the right of their employees to organize and establish an independent voice. Provide all employee benefits without discrimination based on sex. Any health benefits offered cover the full range of reproductive health services -- including abortion. Do not discriminate on the basis of marital status or sexual orientation. Benefits provided to spouses of employees are also extended to domestic partners -- including same-sex couples (Freidan, 2004).”
In the film North Country, the issues of equity and working conditions were that women and men worked very hard on the job. They put their life in jeopardy by inhaling toxic chemicals. They both used portable toilets on the job and they both participated in the Union of the company. Female and male co-workers ate in the lunch room together at the same time. They both shared humor on the job (co-workers laughing at finding a penis being in a lunch box).
My overall impression of the film North Country was that the film is outstanding. I think the film allowed people to view and understand what women use to encounter while being on the job and make women realize that we are not second class citizens. The film North Country allowed people to see why laws are so important for the workplace. My workplace is a work-friendly environment. My brother is the owner of a trucking company. I get to pick my days to work and the hours to work. I can do my homework while monitoring the telephone and watch television while being on the job. I am not penalized for staying too long at lunch or dinner.
The workplace of shame that I visited is Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is the largest employer in the United States. I was surprised that Wal-Mart is getting rid of the full-time employees and replacing them with part-time employees with less benefits. I have never heard of any employee that was ten minutes late being considered as an incomplete. I was surprised that women managers amount to 14% and 92% of women being cashiers. Wal-Mart is discriminating in pay and promotion, no contraceptive coverage in insurance plans, in violation with the Child Labor Laws and the American Disabilities Act. I can’t believe that Wal-Mart would encourage their employees to file for public benefits because the company only pays minimum wage. I agree with the National Organization for Women. “Wal-Mart’s main interest is to continue enriching the Walton family, executives and shareholders at the expense of its workers (Friedan, 2004).”

Blog 15- The Most Interesting Topic Covered This Semester To Me
I believe the topic of Sexual Transmitted Disease and how to live longer shared my greatest interest. STD’S is nothing to play with. It is best before engaging in a relationship to go to a family doctor or nurse for a complete physical. If you have a treatable disease, treat the disease first before having intercourse. If a person has the HIV/AIDS virus, tell the other person so that if the decision is to have intercourse; both parties can take the proper steps in preventing the other person from getting the deadly virus Aids. My suggestion is to not think of people with Aids as not being clean but to think of people with Aids as human beings that are very sick. Volunteer at local hospitals and become familiar with how people with Aids cope on a daily basis. Ask the Aids patient if you can read a scripture to them for support and hope. If you don’t want to read a scripture then read something that you think will make the patient feel better. In the end you and the patient will be rewarded later on.
As far as living longer in life, American’s need to eat more vegetables and fruit. We need to not eat so many fried foods and sweets. I know it is hard to eat healthy when we are in college but, we can take the time and prepare a turkey sandwich for lunch instead of going to Wendy’s restaurant. We also need to eat smaller portions and exercise daily. I believe a healthy heart is one that doesn’t inhale cigarette smoke and one that is getting plenty of exercise combined with eating healthier. Even though, I have reached my goal of loosing 36 pounds; the goal now is to stay motivated and eat healthy for the rest of my life. I believe if I continue to eat healthy, exercise daily, and offer encouragement to patients with Aids in hospitals; I will live a happier, longer life.

Running head: MY HEART HEALTHY STATUS
My Heart Healthy Status Based On the Learn and Live Brief Quiz
Cassandra Magee
Texas Woman’s University
My Heart Healthy Status Based On the Learn and Live Brief Quiz
My heart healthy status is at a risk level of less than one percent of getting heart disease. The heart status means that one out of one-hundred people with my level of heart health will have a heart attack. I realize that my risk factors for coronary heart disease increases over my lifetime with age. My risk assessment according to (White, 2007) showed the total cholesterol 140 mg/dl, HDL Cholesterol 60 mg/dl, Systolic Blood Pressure of 90 mm Hg, no medication treatment for High Blood Pressure, and a non-smoker. I think my heart status is excellent and healthy.
However, I am not a smoker and have never smoked but I am put at risk for heart disease each day; I breathe air contaminated with smoke from cigarettes. I constantly walk past students who smoke each day. Everywhere I go; someone is waking past me with a lit cigarette or is standing in front of buildings smoking on TWU’S campus. By inhaling second-hand smoke, I am not only putting my lungs at risk for cancer but I am increasing my risk of getting coronary heart disease. I was surprised at what the test stated. The test stated that if I continue to inhale second-hand smoke on a daily basis, I will be facing severe problems in the future. I am happy that I only have one year left before I leave TWU’s campus for graduate school.
Since my physician believes I am 12 lbs. overweight and I believe that I am 38 lbs. overweight; I consider myself to be slightly obese. I can exercise daily vigorously for 30 minutes to decrease my risks of heart disease. I have found that by loosing 10 lbs. would decrease my chance of coronary heart disease. I have also found that as a college student that has stress throughout the semester, stress can be a contributing risk for coronary heart disease. I think that to really lower my chances of any risk factors is to throw out all of my candy bars and gummy bears. I would need to not eat any fried foods and eat baked or broiled foods along with limiting the use of butter. I think the small steps taken along with incorporating a vigorous exercise routine for 30 minutes a day would allow me to be a lot healthier and live longer.
My goals have almost been reached. I have lost 12 lbs. and have 26 lbs. left to loose. I have been taking water aerobics for three weeks and enjoy it. I have enrolled in more internet courses and less on campus courses during the summer and fall semesters of college. I think that sticking with my plans and reaching my goal, I will decrease my risk of getting coronary heart disease. I am happy with my test results and I hope, I will continue to be in good standing with the American Heart Association as I age.

What Can a Woman Do to Reduce Her Risk Of Assault?
A woman can reduce her risk of assault by getting a high school diploma and receive a four year degree. Depending on her field of interest, she may want to complete a graduate school. By getting an education and having a job, a woman can be self supportive in life and take care of her children. She would not have to depend on anyone providing for her and her family. A woman can lower her risks of assault by avoiding people who over indulge in drinking alcohol or use illegal drugs. A woman needs to respect herself and not let others disrespect her in anyway. She should never keep firearms in the household. Women need to contact state officials to create tougher penalties for assault. Women should be familiar with the locations of shelters or at least know of one shelter in their community. Women should be familiar with their rights. Women should have friends and speak to family members often. Women should be active in their community and church. A woman should never blame herself for the assault. Women should never engage in relationships where the person in the relationship has committed assault to anyone or has a family history of assault. A woman should always take a friend or family member with her to prevent assault especially in the evening hours and avoid non lighted areas in parking lots during evening hours. All of the examples provided are some ways to reduce risks of assaults on women.

Is Admitting to alcoholism a sign of weakness or strength?
If a woman has an alcohol problem and admits she has an alcohol problem but does nothing about her problem; the woman is weak. If a woman admits she has an alcohol problem and is getting treatment, then this is an act of a strong person. Alcoholism can be a disease of genetics or caused by environmental factors. What ever the reason to bring a person to continually indulge in drinking alcohol is not healthy. A person could die of alcohol poisoning. I would hope that a person would get help and stop over indulging in drinking alcohol. The over indulgence of drinking alcohol is no way to stop thinking about a personal problem or to use alcohol as a way out. A woman that admits she is an alcoholic, gets treatment, stays in treatment, and stops over indulging in the use of drinking alcohol is a strong willed person.

How to Reduce People’s Stigma and Shame of Mental Illness
People can reduce the stigma and shame that concerns mental illness by researching what causes mental illness. A mental illness can be biological or caused by the over indulgence in illegal drugs. People with a mental illness can hold jobs and go to school. They are not contagious or dumb. Many people with mental illnesses caused by the over indulgence of illegal drugs are getting help by a professional and are no longer taking illegal drugs. They continue to go to group therapy sessions for moral support. Many people have been very successful in life. Many are owners of businesses. A person should not think that mental illness is a condition among low socioeconomics. This is not true because, mental illness affects every type of socioeconomic conditions. People, who have a mental illness think, speak, hear, see, taste, and have emotions just like everyone else. They can be self supportive like a person without a mental illness. Many play sports and compete in The Special Olympics. The world is made-up of all types of people and people need to respect one another. If people do this, there would be no sham and stigma of mental illness.

What I Am Doing to Help Me Age Healthfully
I have started walking a brisk walk three times per week. I have also thrown out all of my candy bars and hard candies. Instead of candy, I have incorporated fruit into my diet. I have introduced Pam with vegetable oil to cooking my meals instead of with butter. I no longer deep fry my chicken; I now bake my chicken in my oven. I also grill my chicken on my George Foreman grill. I usually bake all other meats. I no longer use butter on my vegetables; I spray my vegetables with Pam vegetable oil or I steam my vegetables. By these small changes incorporated in my life and continuing to keep the changes; I will hopefully age healthfully in my life.

Factors Which Can Influence Women to Adopt Healthier Lifestyles
A woman who has any type of cancer is a factor that can influence healthier lifestyles by eating organic foods. Organic foods are free of chemicals and don’t cause cancer where as chemically sprayed foods can cause cancer. Women who have cancer or are in treatment of cancer don’t need stress. Stress can speed up cancer cells. Women who are smokers would need to adopt a healthier lifestyle by stopping because; if they continue they will get cancer. A woman in treatment with cancer would be foolish to keep smoking. Smoking while receiving treatment for cancer increases cancer cells which mean a quicker death. I think socioeconomics should be a factor to consider for trying to live a healthier lifestyle. If women don’t make changes in their lives, they may be faced with death. No changes in lifestyle results in death because, of the lack of money or health care. I think that if women eat better, exercise three times per week for 20 minutes a day, take 10-15 minutes to relax and forget about the day’s stressful events; women would live healthier longer lives.

What Should a Woman Do If She Has a Friend Whom She Suspects to Have an Eating Disorder? What If the Friend Denies It?
If I had a friend who I suspected to have an eating disorder, I would first let my friend know that I would be there for her no matter what the stressors’ are in her life. I would then ask her if there was anything going on in her life that we should talk about. If my friend would deny anything going on in her life that we needed to talk about; I would let her know that she has lost a lot of weight too soon and is always avoiding my lunch or dinner invitations. I would tell my friend that she doesn’t need to compare herself with the models in Vogue magazine or the latest, famous actresses seen in Hollywood. I would tell her that it is alright to have hips and not have the perfect shape. I would tell her that if everyone had perfect shapes, no one would have anything to talk about. I would tell my friend that I know that she knows about nutrition and healthy eating habits but, I would suggest that we go to a therapist to find out what is wrong. I would tell my friend that I am really concerned about her and her health. I would inform my friend that what affects her affects me. Friends to me, do things together. If I were not concerned with my friends’ eating situation, I would not be a true friend.

Blog 8- Question #3-Aging
The things that bother’s me the most about getting old is becoming sedentary and not knowing if I would need hormone replacement therapy. I know that some hormones are associated with risks but, many are safe for long term usage and have benefits. The risk of HRT is bothersome to me because, I am a survivor of cancer and I don’t want to take any chances of getting another type of cancer. Also, getting old bothers me because, it means loosing some of my physical beauty. However, aging can make me feel good because, I won’t have to worry about pre-menstrual cramps or a menstrual cycle. I won't have to worry about “is it time to change my tampon.” I think aging is equated with trusts and understanding. I think that with aging, I would not have to worry about continuing my education; I can relax and enjoy life. Good qualities associated with aging are: people are retired from their careers, take more vacations during the year, and spend more quality time with their children/grandchildren. I think that growing old would allow me to feel young again by doing things with my children and grandchildren.

STD’S
If I had a friend or a loved one that suspected that she might have a sexually transmitted disease; I would tell her that it is not the end of the world. I would ask her who her family physician is and make an appointment for her to see a doctor. I would go with her to the doctor to give my support. If my friend or love one does not have a family physician, then I would make an appointment with the health department in our local area and go with her to the health department. I would ask my friend or love one who she thinks that she might have encountered the STD’S from and how many partners have she been with. I would let my friend or love one know that after she visits the doctor and finds out she has STD’S; her partner or partner’s would need to see a doctor to keep from spreading the infection. I would let my friend or love one know that she needs to be more careful and use a barrier method for herself. I would tell her just because a young man looks and smells good doesn’t mean that he is free of STD’S. I would tell her to play it safe and before having sex, equal partner’s should have a physical or at least a blood test to see if either of them has STD’S. I would let her know that STD’S is nothing to be ashamed of or for her to blame herself because, the blame is equally divided. I would tell her that STD’S is in all cultures, races and socioeconomic statuses. I would let my friend or love one know that no one is looking down on her because, we all learn from our mistakes. As a friend, I would let her view pictures from a physician’s office or by the internet of what STD’S can do to a human body if not treated. I would let her know that STD’S is a serious condition that can be fatal if not acted on when the first signs are seen or felt.

Blog #6/ Question 1- Thoughts on Having Children
I am currently not married but have high hopes to get married one day. I don’t want to get married or have children until; I have at least received my master’s degree in psychology. I will not receive my master’s degree for another three years. I want to wait to have children because; I want to be financially secure to raise my children. I have thought about having two children, but with the cost of education, childcare, health care, and after school activities; I don’t think I could raise two children the way I would want them to be raised, unless my husband really has an outstanding job. I believe something would go lacking somewhere with two highly, educated, successful individuals trying to raise their children.
A child needs to be given love, attention, and the feeling of being wanted. I don’t want my child to feel like he or she is a burden to me or prevented me from reaching my goals. To be able to give birth to a child, see a child explore their environment, and grow is a blessing. I am very strong with my faith. I would want to continue the Orthodox Jewish traditions of raising my child, as I have been raised. I want my child to always carry on the family traditions because, he or she can continue passing on his or hers inherited genes to be courageous, independent, educated, financially secure, and successful. I want my child to be able to visit third world countries and volunteer assistance to those who are not as fortunate as my child. I want my child to be appreciative for all of his or hers blessings brought to him or her as their mother is appreciative of her blessings. A woman that can give birth to a child or raise a child is the greatest blessing with the greatest achievement of being a woman.

Blog 5 Question # 1 In what ways could someones culture, beliefs and practices influence contraceptive decision making?
Influences of Contraceptives
Contraceptives are determined by what fits the person’s needs. There are so many different types of contraceptives to choose. A person should consider their health and what fits their religious orientation, if they believe in religion. A person should think about what they believe can work for them and how well the contraceptive method fits into their lifestyles. A person may want to consider if a prescription is needed or if the contraceptive can be purchased without a prescription. A person needs to consider if he or she is married. The decisions about contraceptives are sometimes determined by who is the head of the household.
In many cultures, the man makes the decisions as to what types of contraceptives can be used. Socioeconomics may not allow contraceptives to be used in relationships. Several Asian cultures place limits as to how many children a couple may have. In our country, American’s can have as many children as they desire. Contraceptives should not be forced on anyone. Everyone should have a choice as to what types of contraceptive methods they want to use and if they want to use a contraceptive.

Blog 4 Menarche-Question#2
Blog 4 Question#2 Menarche
My first menstrual cycle was a negative for me. My period started when I was at home riding my skateboard. I thought I had cut myself. I went into the house and asked my mother for a band aid. My mother told me that the blood was not due to a cut but due to my period. She explained to me what a period is about. My family members were happy for me; because having my period meant that they would not have to babysit me much longer. My period meant that I was growing up and not a baby anymore. To me, a period meant I couldn’t swim or participate in sports because; I was wearing a sanitary napkin. I was always thinking about changing my napkin. I lived in fear constantly worried that someone could see my napkin through my clothes. I hated going to school when I was on my period. I always felt blotted and heavy during my period. Now, manufactures make slim tampons, so I can swim during my period and don’t have to worry if someone can see anything. I am more confident during my menstrual cycle. I can do whatever I want and not feel ashamed.

Blog 3 Preventive Practices
I would rate myself a seven on my preventive practices which is about average. Some of the ways that I can improve my health are by getting at least six to eight hours of sleep each night, increasing physical exercise and drinking less wine with my dinner. I have already implemented a healthy diet with fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. I also avoid using tobacco products, drugs and do not have friends who use tobacco products or have anything to do with an illegal substance.
Adults can encourage adolescents to follow healthy behaviors by setting and showing examples for them. The examples can be by showing adolescents with other adolescents going to church, reading The Bible, teaching teenage Bible study and placing adolescents on youth comities. Adults can also encourage adolescents to limit time being spent watching television.
My idea for reaching adolescents through the media is to show other adolescents that don’t listen to their parent’s, don’t go to church, don’t practice positive actions, and show what negative behaviors have on their future. The media can show adolescents in prisons, and sleeping on an abandoned park bench without a coat during the winter months while being homeless. I believe the media would get adolescents attention and have an influence on what they choose to do with their lives.
Parents need to enforce the rules of the house and have better standards for their children. Health care providers need to lower insurance premiums and health educators need to communicate better with adolescents. As a whole, society needs to realize that the time of adolescence is a very important part of life. Everyone has to experience and learn from their mistakes in order to live a healthy, fruitful life.

Blog 2 Economics on Women's Healthcare
In reading the articles concerning Economics on Women's Healthcare, I was very surprised at what I had read. I believe women should not be discriminated against because of age, income or any other health reasons. I believe that healthcare should be the same rate for everyone regardless of age, gender, education and socioeconomics. Women should receive the same healthcare privileges as men with the same rate.I believe that access to healthcare is a right for everyone regardless of age, gender, health reasons or socioeconomics.

Health Issues
The health issues that I am concerned with are skin cancer and iron deficiency. I am a surviving melanoma skin cancer patient. My skin cancer was discovered by my family physician who thought my mole on the left side of my face was too large. I had a biopsy of the mole on my face and the biopsy revealed that I had an early stage of melanoma. I had been feeling tired a lot but I never thought my tiredness was caused by my melanoma. I had the mole removed from my skin by laser and I was placed on an oral chemotherapy plan. I am cancer free at the moment but I have to wear sunscreen every day and re-apply the sunscreen to my skin every six hours. I also have to take 60mg. of iron a day because I have an iron deficiency which is a side effect of skin cancer. If I don’t take my iron every day, I feel tired and dizzy. Everyone should wear some type of sunscreen every day whether the sun is shinning or not during the day hours to prevent skin cancer and sun damage to the skin. Untreated skin cancer and iron deficiency can be detrimental.
I asked my best friend Kelly who is 19 years of age, an American and a physical education major at U.N.T. what health issues concerned her? Kelly said obesity and depression were her concerns on health. She said that obesity is caused by not getting enough physical exercise and eating too many fatty, high calorie foods. Kelly believes that if women were to eat less high calorie foods and increased the level of physical exercise; then there would be no over- weight women and no depression.
I asked my mother who is an immigrant from France what health issues concerned her. My mother said she is concerned with obesity and high blood pressure. She explained to me that she is much older and was told by her doctor that she needed to loose 25 pounds. She said her doctor discovered that she now has high blood pressure and that he has prescribed medication to lower her blood pressure. My mother says she has to exercise three times a week and go on a strict diet so that she can be taken off her high blood pressure medication.
My concerns on women health issues were different from my mother’s and Kelly’s but we are taken preventive measures. The preventive measures are to use sunscreen, increase physical activity and eat healthier so that we can live a happy, fruitful life.
